Need a New Car Battery in Toms River

Your car battery is the power source that keeps it moving. You could have a full tank of gas, brand new tires, and an engine in perfect working order. None of that matters if your battery dies. You will end up stranded in a parking lot, on the side of the road or unable to back your car out of the driveway. It will be time to replace your car battery.

High Temperatures Can Cause Car Battery Failure

More often than not, you will experience a dead car battery in the winter. It’s only natural to assume that the extreme temperatures of the winter season are the cause of this failure, but that usually isn’t the case. While the actual failure may take place during the colder months of the year, the deterioration begins during the heat of the summer.

The summer season’s extreme heat can really take a toll on your car battery. Battery issues typically start long before the cooler temperatures arrive. Heat has a much greater effect on battery life than cold does.

Once the heat has had it way with your battery, colder temperatures increase the thickness of the engine oil. This makes it more difficult for the engine to turn over, which makes the battery work that much harder. This is why dead batteries usually occur in the winter.

Driving Habits Impact Car Battery Life

How you use your car can also affect how long your battery lasts. Your driving habits can also contribute to a shorter battery life. Frequently starting the car and turning it off will cause greater wear and tear on your battery and your starter. Making a lot of short trips (less than 20 minutes), your battery won’t have enough time to fully recharge, shortening its overall life expectancy.

Other things that can have an impact on car battery life are weather conditions, mileage, vehicle age and  entertainment systems like an in-vehicleVD player, as they have a significant electrical draw.

Signs Your Car Battery is Beginning to Fail

If you notice any of the following  issues, it’s time to get your battery checked.

  • Car is slow to start – The engine seems sluggish and takes longer than normal to start.
  • Check engine light – If your battery is weak the check engine light may come on.
  • Low battery fluid  – Car battery casing is typically translucent so you can see the level of the battery fluid. It should not be below the lead plates or energy conductor inside the battery.
  • Swollen or bloated battery casing – This swelling is caused by extreme heat and decreases battery life.
  • Corrosion – If the posts your battery cables connect are corroded, your car may not. You can clean the posts but this corrosion is usually caused by a leaking battery which should be replaced.
  • Simple Old Age -.A car battery doesn’t last forever. The manufacturer’s label usually tells you how long it is expected to last. Under normal conditions, anywhere from 3 to 7 years is not unusual. Once it hit the three year mark, it is best to have a yearly battery inspection.
