When Is It Time For New Tires – Know What to Look For
Your tires are just as important to your car as your feet are to you. If you break a foot, you can’t walk. If you bust a tire, your car can’t drive. So making sure your tires are in good condition and knowing when they need to be replaced is especially important. Now, you may be asking yourself, when is it time for new tires. If so, here are some tell-tale signs that you should make a visit to your local service center.
Bulges, Bubbles or Cracks
One of the most obvious signs that you need new tires is if there are any bulges or bubbles protruding from your tire. This is a sign that you tire could blow out at any moment. If you see bulges or bubbles on any of your tires, the safest thing to do would be to take it directly to your local service center.
Another obvious sign that your car needs new tires is if you notice cracks or cuts on the sidewalls. While these cracks may not look as severe as the bulges or bubbles, it is still a sign that your tire could be close to blowing out. It could also mean that your tire is developing a leak or already has one.
The tread on your tire is extremely important for having a good grip on the road. When it is at the right level it will prevent you from losing control and your car from spinning out, even in wet and slippery conditions. But when it is not at the right level it becomes much easier for your tires to spin out, even in dry road conditions. There are a few ways to check the depth of the tread on your tires.
One way is to buy a gauge, like professionals use, in order to measure the depth. Your tread should never be below 1/16th of an inch. Another way to measure it is to use a penny. Take a penny and place it in the grooves of your tires with Abraham Lincoln’s head right side up. If you can see Honest Abe’s entire head, then it is too low.
Newer tires are making it even easier for people to know when their tread is too low. They have tread wear indicator bars have been built in. You can’t see them when the tires are new but as wear and tear happens over time, these bars will start to become visible. If more than one or two of these bars are visible on a single tire, you should take your car to a mechanic and ask about getting new tires.
Too Much Vibration
When you drive, there will obviously be a certain amount of vibration that you feel. But too much vibration could mean your tires are in trouble. It could mean that your tires are misaligned or unbalanced. This will most likely be the case if you find yourself fighting to keep your car going in a straight line. Too much vibration while driving doesn’t always mean there is an issue with your tires, though it could very well lead to one. If your tires are unbalanced, they will wear unevenly, making for a rough ride and a shorter lifespan for your tires. So if you’re driving down a freshly paved road but it feels like you’re driving over cobblestones, you might want to take your car to a mechanic.
Decreasing Air Pressure
Lastly, a decrease in tire pressure is a big indicator that there is something wrong with your tire. Most cars that are manufactured now come with a digital indicator on the dashboard that tells you when one of your tires needs more air. Now just because this light comes on, it doesn’t always mean there is an issue. It is completely normal for you to need to fill your tires with more air every once in awhile. However, if it starts to happen more frequently like once a week then there could be a problem.
