Tips for Finding a Reliable Auto Mechanic

Needing to have your car serviced can be a cause for anxiety, especially when it comes to finding a reliable auto mechanic. Car repairs can be expensive but if they’re not done properly, it could cause further damage and end up costing even more.

While there is no foolproof way to find the perfect mechanic, there are some things you can look for that will give you an indication as to whether or not the auto mechanic you are considering is reliable.

Tips for Finding a Reliable Auto Mechanic

Get References

This is one of the easiest ways to get some information about the auto mechanic you are considering. You can ask family, friends, and co-workers who they use for car maintenance and repair.

The internet is also a good place to look for references. It is becoming more and more common for people to post reviews about service providers they have used.

Length of Time in Business

Ask how long the the auto repair shop has been in business. This is relevant for two reasons. First, the longer the shop has been in business the more experience they have. It is always good to have your car serviced by mechanics that are highly skilled and knowledgeable.

Second, any business that is not reputable and uses questionable business practices will earn a bad reputation. This reputation will spread either by word of mouth or online reviews, reducing their clientele and, in many cases, eventually putting them out of business. So, if the repair shop has a long history, it’s a positive sign.

Certified Auto Mechanic

Make sure that the mechanics in the shop are certified and are members of of at least one organization for highly skilled mechanics, such as ASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Keep in mind, an auto repair shop can display the ASE certification seal even if only one of their auto mechanic has completed the tests and received certification. Ask which mechanics are certified and will be working on your car.

The auto repair shop will most likely to be proud of their credentials and be happy to show them off. If you inquiry about any certifications they may have and they become vague or defensive, it’s time to find a different repair shop.

Repair Shop Appearance

It’s a garage, so of course there will be oil stains on the floor and a few tools or auto parts lying about. That doesn’t mean it should be dirty or all the tools just randomly strewn about the shop. The repair shop should be a clean as possible and tools and auto parts not currently being use should be stored in an organized manner.

The waiting area for customer should also be clean and comfortable. The cleanliness of the shop and it’s waiting area is a reflection of how much they value their customer’s and the pride taken in the service they provide.

Trial Run

Once you’ve done your research and chosen an auto mechanic and a repair shop, it’s a good idea to give them a trial run on something small like an oil change or a tune up. Some services have a set price, but for those that don’t, be sure to ask for an estimate and that they let you know before they do any work other than what was agreed upon.

While a reputable auto mechanic can sometimes spot an unrelated problem while working on your car, if they suddenly claim there are a bunch of other problems and the estimated cost goes through the roof, you should be wary. If your car was running fine and you just brought it in for routine maintenance, you may want to consider taking it somewhere else for a second opinion.
